Consistently rated as one of the best superminis money can buy, the Volkswagen Polo has just entered its sixth generation. This popular compact family car is bigger than ever, providing class-competitive levels of interior space.
While retaining its familiar outline, the latest Polo has received a major stylistic revamp, ensuring that it is every bit the modern car. The car’s front fascia is now adorned by a horizontal chrome strip that links newly fashioned headlights – complete with LED daytime running lights – to the iconic VW insignia. The Polo’s profile is more dramatic than before, with a rising window line helping to give the vehicle its assertive stance. The Polo’s roofline ends in a smart-looking rear spoiler, which overlooks smartly restyled brake lights.
The latest Polo is wider than ever and features a longer wheelbase. The net result is even more passenger space than before, particularly for those in the rear seats. There’s plenty of head and legroom, and more than enough space for four adult travellers – or a family of five. The car’s increased dimensions mean that boot volume has been expanded too. The Polo now possesses a minimum-capacity 351-litre cargo space – 71 litres larger than can be found in the fifth-generation model. Luggage capacity also outstrips many others in its class.
A range of seven petrol and two diesel engines are available for this newest iteration of the Polo. Entry-level models are typically fitted with a 1.0-litre petrol engine with power outputs of 59bhp or 75bhp, managing up to 58.9mpg and producing a low 108g/km CO2 emission figure. Delivering even greater fuel-efficiency is a 1.4-litre 74bhp diesel unit, which returns as much as 76.3mpg and produces emissions as low as 95g/km. All engine options come with fuel-saving Start/Stop technology and brake energy recuperation too.
Technology and safety
The all-new Polo Volkswagen vehicle features a digital instrument binnacle, enabling easy operation and eye-catching visuals. All models come with a minimum-size 6.5-inch infotainment display too, providing MirrorLink, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, among other features.
Rated a full five stars by Euro NCAP, the new Polo boasts a wide range of safety systems as standard, such as Automatic Emergency Braking and Front Assist. The former helps to significantly prevent collisions, while the latter uses long-range radar technology to monitor the activity of vehicles that are as far as 80 metres ahead. Optional driver aids include Adaptive Cruise Control and a Blind-Spot Warning System.
