The all-new Arteon is Volkswagen’s answer to similar vehicles produced by the likes of Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz. This executive-level hatchback boasts stylish good looks, a roomy interior and a raft of high-tech features.
Purposeful-looking yet sophisticatedly styled, the Arteon impresses no matter which way you look at it. The car’s front fascia sports an eye-catching multi-louvered radiator grille that appears to blend seamlessly into a subtly striking headlight array, which features LED daytime running lights. The vehicle is enhanced by crisp creases on its bonnet and flanks, and the latter are also adorned with tastefully enlarged wheel arches. Perhaps best of all, the Arteon possesses a dramatically swooping roofline, giving the car its captivating silhouette.
The Arteon easily accommodates five full-size adults, providing plenty of head and legroom throughout. The car is upholstered in leather and Alcantara, and features electrically adjustable and heated front seats. In addition to a rake-and-reach-adjustable steering wheel, this allows the driver to establish his or her ideal position. The Arteon delivers a comfortable ride for all, particularly when it opens up on long stretches of motorway. The vehicle’s 563-litre boot space compares very favourably with others in its class, offering 80 litres more some. With rear seats folded, luggage capacity expands significantly. The hatchback tailgate makes the cargo bay much easier to use than the Arteon’s saloon rivals.
The car is typically installed with a 2.0-litre petrol engine, with power outputs of 187bhp or 276bhp. The latter delivers 0-60mph in approximately 5.4 seconds, while managing up to 38.7mpg. The most fuel-efficient option is a 2.0-litre 148bhp diesel unit, which returns as much as 62.8mpg. A 1.5-litre 148bhp petrol engine is due to follow soon and there is also talk of a powerful six-cylinder unit being added at a later date.
Technology and safety
An eminently configurable Active Info system is featured, displaying speed, fuel consumption, driver aid settings and colour mapping, among other things. The car also boasts a minimum eight-inch display screen that provides access to the car’s range of infotainment features, including DAB digital radio and satellite navigation.
The vehicle has been awarded a five-star crash-test rating by Euro NCAP and comes with an array of protective features. These include Active Cruise Control, Active Lighting and Lane-keeping Assist, which enable the car to react to the movement of other vehicles. A range of exterior and interior sensors are fitted to monitor activity within and out. Their presence ensures that the car can be brought safely to a halt if the driver appears to have become incapacitated, for example.
