Toyota has been revolutionising hybrid car technologies ever since it released its flagship Prius, 20 years ago. And with the release of the Toyota Yaris Hybrid, it has created its smallest and most efficient hybrid car to date. Despite its supermini frame, the Yaris has no problem making room for an extra engine.
The Yaris Hybrid packs an exterior design which is contemporary and sharp. Its defined and upright lines suggest functionality and precision, while the car’s large windows at the sides and rear provide plenty of visibility for the driver. There are 14 attractive body colours to choose from, which range from Glacier Pearl White to Tokyo Red, and a choice of body combinations to match your style and personality. The 15-inch alloy wheels are offered as standard, while LED daytime running lights and rear LED lights are included from the Design trim.
The inclusion of an electric battery doesn't prevent the Yaris from providing a spacious and comfortable interior. Climb inside and you’ll find a high cabin with plenty of room for the driver and passengers, and deep footwells for roomy and relaxing journeys. The car’s great ergonomics extend to the dashboard, which features softly yielding controls that are easily within reach. Dual-zone climate control is offered as standard on entry-level Active, while Icon and up add air conditioning, a reversing camera and push-button start function.
A hybrid car provides superior fuel economy, as its combustion engine and electric battery combine to share the workload. The Yaris Hybrid comes fitted with a 1.5-litre 100bhp engine with automatic transmission, and offers a pleasantly smooth and quiet driving experience. It also returns up to 85mpg at the pumps, and uses the car’s excess energy to keep the electric motor charged, all of which makes for frugal and efficient drives.
Safety and technology
The Yaris Hybrid comes with a full five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, and features as standard seven airbags, tyre-pressure monitors and Vehicle Stability Control. Upgrade to Toyota Safety Sense and you’ll receive Automatic High Beam, which warns other drivers of your position, and a Pre-Collision System which detects vehicles ahead of you.
Toyota’s Touch 2 infotainment system, DAB radio and Bluetooth function are all offered from Icon trim and up. The Touch 2 unit features voice recognition, an integrated navigation tool with 3D mapping and a system which warns you of approaching speed limits and cameras.
