The Volkswagen Touran is a compact seven-seater that is ideal for conveying family members or groups of friends or colleagues. The car first rolled off the production line in 2003; in between then and the release of a second-generation model in 2015, it received a couple of facelifts.
The Touran delivers a noteworthy ride quality, and the inclusion of electro-mechanical steering provides a flexible solution to a variety of motoring situations. The driver also benefits from multi-adjustable seating and a rake-adjustable steering wheel, helping him or her to quickly establish their ideal position. The vehicle can be used as a typical five-seater, with the third row folding flat to the floor. The second row of seats offer added flexibility since they can be slid forwards or folded down – or removed entirely. Boot space starts at 121 litres but with only the front two seats in place, 1,989 litres of cargo capacity becomes available.
Many Touran variants are installed with a 1.6-litre petrol engine, with power outputs of 100bhp or 113bhp. The latter manages up to 37.7mpg and produces a 182g/km CO2 emission figure. For optimal fuel-efficiency, look for models that are fitted with a 1.9-litre 103bhp diesel unit, which returns as much as 52.3mpg and emissions as low as 144g/km.
The Touran comes with plenty of standard safety equipment, such as Electronic Stability Programme and Anti-lock Braking System, each helping to mitigate loss of traction. Passive safety features, meanwhile, include a suite of airbags and front seatbelt pre-tensioners and force-limiters.
